Communities In Schools
Communities In Schools of Hampton Roads, is a local affiliate of the national organization Communities In Schools. The nation’s leading dropout prevention organization has been helping students achieve in school, graduate and go on to bright futures since 2012 in the Hampton Roads area. Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
"It is because of a caring adult in our lives that we have been successful. For the students of Hampton Roads, that person is Communities In Schools of Hampton Roads,” said Wendy Hosick, Past Board President. “We have a proven model and it works. It's a very impactful solution to an enormous problem."
Every 26 seconds a student drops out of school. Communities In Schools of Hampton Roads works within the school system to address underlying factors that impede student success. We serve the most vulnerable students in the most dropout-prone school districts. Our organization is actively engaged with policy makers, school staff, parents and business partners to ensure that CISofHR's services are extended to as many K-12 students as possible and that those students have access to college.
What sets us apart is our model of integrated student services. Communities In Schools of Hampton Roads identifies students at risk of not graduating; assess school and student needs; and establish relationships with local businesses, social service agencies, health care providers, and parent and volunteer organizations to harness needed resources. Whether it’s tutoring, eyeglasses or just a safe place to be after school, when these needs are met, students can concentrate on learning.
