State of the City: Newport News

On Thursday, January 30, 2025, the Virginia Peninsula Chamber had the honor of hosting the State of the City – Newport News, featuring an address by Mayor Phillip Jones centered around the theme “Our City. Our Story. Our Moment.” His speech reflected on the city's rich history, its progress, and the vision for the future.

In “Our City,” Mayor Jones highlighted “A Legacy Steeped in History,” paying tribute to the leadership that has shaped Newport News over the years. He honored past mayors, including Joseph C. Ritchie (1976-1986), Jessie M. Rattley (1986-1990), Barry E. DuVal (1990-1996), Joe S. Frank (1996-2010), and McKinley L. Price (2010–2022), before acknowledging his own time as Mayor, which began in 2023.

In “Our Story,” he spoke about the city's growth and evolution, focusing on infrastructure, innovation, education, and opportunity. To conclude, Mayor Phillip Jones looked ahead to “Our Moment,” encouraging the community to embrace authenticity, diversity, and culture as they shape the future for generations to come.
